“Doc, it’s just a mole. I’ve had it for years.”
That’s how most skin cancer consults begin.
At IOCI, we hear it all the time—and sometimes, they’re right. But sometimes, they’re not. Skin cancer doesn’t always scream.
- It starts as a whisper: a patch that won’t heal, a mole that suddenly looks different, a spot that wasn’t there before.
- The biggest mistake? Assuming it’s harmless. And the biggest myth? That all skin cancers are the same.
They’re not. Let’s walk you through the difference—plain and simple.
First, the Basics: Two Main Categories
1. Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer (NMSC)
This includes:
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) – slow-growing, rarely spreads, but can still cause damage if left alone
Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) – a bit more aggressive, can spread deeper if ignored
We see these more often in patients who’ve had long-term sun exposure—farmers, drivers, athletes, even teachers who stand outdoors during school hours.
2. Melanoma
This is the one we worry about more.
It forms in the pigment-producing cells of the skin and can spread fast—to lymph nodes, organs, even the brain.
Melanoma isn’t common, but when it shows up, we don’t take chances.
What We Do at IOCI
Here’s how we approach skin cancer at our centers:
Early detection through detailed skin checks
Biopsies done quickly for anything even slightly suspicious
Image-Guided Radiation Therapy for non-melanoma cases where surgery isn’t possible
Immunotherapy and surgical oncology teams for melanoma cases
Follow-ups that don’t leave you in the dark
And yes—we offer these services across all our centers. Not just in metros.
Where to Come, What to Do
If you’re unsure about a mole, don’t panic.
Just come in. Let’s take a look. It might be nothing—but if it’s something, we’ll catch it early.
