It’s Just Acidity or Is It? Misdiagnosing Gallbladder Cancer

21 August 2025

When Stomach Trouble Isn’t Just Stomach Trouble

Abdominal discomfort. Bloating. Indigestion. These are things we’ve all experienced and often brushed off as acidity or gas. But for many patients in India, these common symptoms were not simple digestive issues. They were signs of something far more serious  gallbladder cancer.

At IOCI India, we’ve seen how the early symptoms of gallbladder cancer are often mistaken for acidity. This delay in diagnosis costs valuable time and sometimes lives.

A Silent Cancer with No Loud Warnings

Gallbladder cancer is one of the most misdiagnosed cancers in India. It doesn’t come with obvious symptoms in the beginning. The pain is mild. The bloating is vague. Fatigue feels like overworking. By the time stronger signs like jaundice, vomiting, or weight loss appear, the cancer is often advanced.

Patients often ask how long can cancer go undetected. In the case of gallbladder cancer, it can quietly grow for months or even years. This is why understanding the early signs and knowing when to investigate further is so important.

Why Tests Aren’t Always Enough

Another common belief is that regular health checkups will catch everything. But can cancer be detected in routine blood test? Not always. Gallbladder cancer rarely shows up in standard blood work. Liver function tests might hint at something abnormal, but they aren’t conclusive.

Imaging like ultrasounds, CT scans, and MRIs are usually required to detect any structural changes. In many cases, gallbladder cancer is only discovered after surgery for gallstones or during scans done for unrelated issues.

It’s Not Just a Tumor

People often confuse growth in the body and use terms like tumor and cancer interchangeably. But there is a real difference between tumor and cancer. A tumor is any abnormal growth. It can be benign, meaning non-cancerous, or malignant, meaning cancerous. Gallbladder polyps or stones may be harmless, but in some cases, these can lead to or mask underlying malignancy.

That’s why it’s essential to follow up on any persistent digestive issue that doesn’t respond to routine treatment

What You Should Watch For

If you're experiencing chronic upper abdominal pain, especially in the right side under the ribs, or if you feel bloated after small meals, don't ignore it. Add to that unexplained fatigue, nausea, or yellowing of the skin, and it’s time to seek specialist care.

Women over 40 with a history of gallstones or family history of abdominal cancers should be especially cautious.
