How your own immune system is becoming part of the treatment team.
At IOCI, we’ve sat across from patients who’ve tried everything—surgery, chemotherapy, radiation. And then we bring up one more word: immunotherapy.
They ask, “Does that mean my body can actually fight the cancer?”
And we tell them the truth: yes—if we train it the right way.
Bladder cancer, especially in its advanced stages, used to leave fewer options. But with immunotherapy, we’re seeing something different: a second chance, backed by science and your own immune system.
So, What Is Immunotherapy?
In simple terms, immunotherapy helps your body recognize cancer as the enemy—and fight it.
Your immune system fights infections every day. But cancer can hide from it. Immunotherapy removes the blindfold, helping immune cells find and destroy cancer cells more effectively.
How Does It Work in Bladder Cancer?
For advanced or recurrent bladder cancer, especially after surgery or chemotherapy, immunotherapy is often the next step.
We use immune checkpoint inhibitors—medications that block the proteins cancer uses to “turn off” immune responses. Once blocked, your immune system stays alert and active.
At IOCI, our uro-oncology and medical oncology teams decide if you’re a candidate for immunotherapy based on:
- Stage of cancer
- Biomarker testing (PD-L1 expression)
- General health and treatment history
Who’s a Good Candidate?
Immunotherapy is usually recommended for:
- Patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer not responding to chemo
- Patients who can’t tolerate traditional chemo
- People whose cancer has spread (metastasized)
- Those with recurring bladder cancer after initial treatment
“I was told I had no more options,” shared one of our patients at IOCI Noida.
“Then came immunotherapy—and it changed everything.”
What to Expect During Treatment
- Given through IV (outpatient setting)
- Usually once every 2–3 weeks
- Fewer side effects than chemo, though possible fatigue, skin issues, or inflammation can occur
- Requires close monitoring by your care team
Immunotherapy is not an overnight fix—but for many, it slows progression and improves quality of life without the intense side effects of chemotherapy.
Support Beyond the Treatment
At IOCI, immunotherapy patients receive:
- Regular scans and lab monitoring
- Oncology nutrition support to maintain strength and immunity
- Access to counsellors and support groups
- Guidance on managing side effects gently and safely
Because treating cancer is only part of it—supporting the human being is the other half.
