When people think of skin cancer, they often imagine older adults or long-time sunbathers. But that’s not the full picture.
At IOCI, we’re seeing more young adults—men and women in their 20s and 30s—coming in with suspicious skin patches, changing moles, and unexpected diagnoses.
And it’s not just about outdoor jobs or summer vacations. It’s about awareness—or the lack of it.
Here’s what every young adult needs to know about skin cancer, before the first warning signs appear.
Yes, Young Adults Get Skin Cancer Too
In fact, melanoma is one of the most common cancers among people aged 20–39.
It doesn’t take years of tanning or endless sunbathing to cause trouble. Sometimes, just repeated unprotected exposure, bad sunburns during childhood, or a family history can increase the risk.
We’ve diagnosed melanoma in:
- Gym trainers
- College students
- Delivery professionals
- Newly working professionals spending long hours on the road
The Real Role of Sunscreen
If you’re not using sunscreen daily, you’re not protecting your skin fully.
What matters most:
- Use SPF 30 or higher
- Choose broad-spectrum (UVA & UVB protection)
- Reapply every 2–3 hours when outdoors
- Don’t forget lips, ears, neck, and back of hands
Your 20s are the decade to build smart habits. By the time you’re 40, they’ll have protected you from decades of damage.
We’ve helped several young patients catch skin changes early at our Best Diagnostic Testing Centers, just through simple mole checks.
Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore
You don’t need to panic—but you do need to pay attention.
Get any of these checked immediately:
- A new mole that looks “different” from others
- Changes in the size, shape, or color of a mole
- A sore or patch that doesn't heal for more than 3 weeks
- Itchy or bleeding spots, especially on sun-exposed areas
- Flat, dark patches on palms, soles, or under nails (especially in darker skin tones)
The good news? Skin cancer, if caught early, is almost always treatable.
Real Story: Aayushi, 27
Aayushi came to IOCI Noida after noticing a black dot on her ankle that wouldn’t go away. She was healthy, active, and had no family history of cancer.
A biopsy confirmed early-stage melanoma.
“I almost skipped the appointment because I thought I was overreacting,” she said.
“Now, I’m just grateful I trusted my gut.”
Her mole was removed through minor surgery. No chemo. No long hospital stays. Just early detection and the right call at the right time.
