Inside the Second Opinion Process: What Really Happens at IOCI

28 August 2025

The Power of Looking Twice

Cancer is one of the biggest decisions in a person’s life. Yet many people start treatment after just one consultation. At IOCI India, we believe that cancer care should never be rushed. That’s why we strongly encourage patients to seek a second opinion not because the first one is wrong, but because it may not be complete
Our Second Opinion process isn’t just a review of reports. It’s a full re-evaluation of the diagnosis, treatment plan, and the patient’s personal goals. We look at what’s right, what’s missing, and what’s possible

Step One: You Come With Doubts. We Listen Without Judgment

Many people feel guilty about questioning their first doctor. But one of the biggest cancer myths vs facts in India is that asking for a second opinion shows mistrust. That’s false. It shows strength
Whether you’ve just received a cancer diagnosis or you’re already undergoing treatment, you’re welcome to bring your reports to IOCI. Our team first listens to your story  what you’ve been told, how you feel about it, and what you’re worried about. We respect what’s already been done and then carefully look for what could be better

Step Two: Your Case Is Reviewed by a Team, Not Just One Doctor

Once we receive your scans, pathology reports, bloodwork, and treatment history, our multidisciplinary Tumor Board steps in. Unlike single-consultation models, our second opinions are discussed by a panel of oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, and pathologists
This team asks all the top questions to ask your oncologist  Does this diagnosis look accurate? Is the stage correctly assigned? Is the current treatment plan the best option? Could we use a less aggressive approach? Are advanced therapies like immunotherapy available for this case?

Step Three: You Get Options, Not Pressure

Once the review is complete, we call you in for a consultation. You don’t get a verdict. You get walked through your options
If we agree with the current plan, we tell you why. If we believe there’s a better approach, we explain it in detail. We also talk about what happens after cancer surgery, the possible side effects, recovery time, emotional impact, and financial planning
The goal is not to change everything. The goal is to make sure your path forward is informed, safe, and centered on your life.

Step Four: You Decide What Happens Next

Whether you choose to continue treatment with us or stay with your original hospital, we respect your decision. Some patients come to us just for clarity. Others decide to shift their entire care. Either way, we remain a partner in your journey
Many patients return to thank us not just for a better treatment plan, but for peace of mind. Because sometimes, the second opinion doesn’t change the outcome  but it changes how you feel about it.

Final Thought

Cancer decisions deserve time, thought, and a full-circle view. One doctor can treat your cancer. But a team can plan your recovery
